PMOS in Practice
Optimizing Health
for People with PMOS

This course was built by practicing midwives for the realities of your patient panel.

  • Describe the pathophysiology and multisystem nature of PMOS (formerly PCOS), including its reproductive, metabolic, dermatologic, and psychological manifestations.
  • Identify signs, symptoms, risk factors, and clinical presentations that warrant evaluation for PMOS across the reproductive lifespan.
  • Apply current diagnostic criteria to determine whether an adolescent or adult patient meets criteria for PMOS.
  • Select an appropriate evidence-based diagnostic evaluation for suspected PMOS, including laboratory testing and appropriate use of ultrasound and/or AMH, while excluding alternative etiologies.
  • Assess patients with PMOS for metabolic, cardiovascular, endometrial, psychological, and sleep-related risks using appropriate history, physical examination, laboratory testing, and validated screening tools.
  • Develop an individualized longitudinal monitoring and referral plan for a patient with PMOS based on clinical findings, risk factors, symptoms, and patient priorities.
  • Formulate an evidence-based, individualized management plan for a patient with PMOS who is not currently seeking pregnancy, addressing menstrual/endometrial health, hyperandrogenic symptoms, metabolic health, and long-term disease prevention.
  • Apply patient-centered communication and shared decision-making strategies that support patient agency, minimize weight stigma and bias, and promote achievable health-behavior goals.
  • Develop an initial preconception and fertility evaluation plan for a patient with PMOS who desires pregnancy.
  • Select appropriate first-line fertility interventions for anovulatory infertility associated with PMOS, including health optimization, timed intercourse, and pharmacologic ovulation induction, and identify indications for escalation or specialty referral.
  • Provide individualized, evidence-based patient education and anticipatory guidance regarding PMOS, including symptom management, lifelong health risks, reproductive goals, fertility, follow-up, and reliable patient resources.
  • Integrate evidence-based PMOS care into clinical practice using appropriate screening tools, clinical workflows, patient education/after-visit resources, documentation templates, and relevant coding and billing considerations.

Lori Swain, DNP, CNM, MSCP, FACNM

Lori Swain

DNP, CNM, MSCP, FACNM

Lori presents the PMOS evaluation: the diagnostic workup, ruling out conditions that mimic PMOS, and planning ongoing monitoring. She draws on full-time clinical practice with a specific focus on gynecologic care.

Jennifer Ham, DNP, CNM, MSCP, FACNM

Jennifer Ham

DNP, CNM, MSCP, FACNM

Jennifer presents treatment options, optimizing fertility, and the practice toolkit. Her expertise in systems quality improvement and love for education directly informs how this course translates clinical knowledge into practice-level change.

Heather Carrion, CNM, MSCP, RNFA

Heather Carrion

Learn Together. Grow Together.

Learning as a team makes it easier to turn new knowledge into meaningful change. When clinicians learn together within the context of their own practice, conversations become more collaborative, implementation feels more manageable, and everyone gains confidence using evidence-based PMOS care in real-world settings. Team learning also creates built-in support, shared understanding, and greater consistency across patient care which helps your organization move from education to impact.
